GENCORP ELECTS R. BYRON PIPES TO ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 FAIRLAWN, Ohio, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- GenCorp (NYSE: GY) announced today that R. Byron Pipes, Ph.D., has been elected a director of the corporation, effective immediately. Pipes is the president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
 "Dr. Pipes brings to GenCorp a wealth of experience and expertise in research, engineering and academic management, marked by many honors and distinguished accomplishments. His leadership capability and pioneering spirit will further strengthen our board of directors," said A. William Reynolds, GenCorp chairman and chief executive officer.
 Just this month, Pipes was named the 17th president in the 169-year history of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, he joined Rensselaer after spending 21- years in the field of higher education.
 Early in his career, Pipes was a senior structures engineer at General Dynamics. He then became the assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Drexel University.
 In 1972, he served first as an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Delaware, later as full professor, and in 1989 was promoted to Robert L. Spencer professor of engineering. Pipes entered academic administration in 1977 as acting director of Delaware's Center for Composite Materials, which he co-founded in 1974. In 1978, he became its permanent director, pioneering an industry/ university research program involving faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. Under his leadership, the center became one of the first six National Engineering Research Centers named by the National Science Foundation. The United States Army named it a Center of Excellence in 1986. Today, nearly 40 firms from around the world participate in its research activity.
 Pipes became the dean of the College of Engineering in 1985, and created the Delaware Transportation Center, a joint venture with the Delaware Department of Transportation and the Center for Applied Coastal Research. He also oversaw the creation of a Composites Technology Park on campus.
 In 1991, Pipes was promoted to provost, the university's chief academic officer and second-ranking administrator.
 Among Pipes' awards are the Chaire Francqui Distinguished Visiting Faculty Scholar Award from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium for 1984-85; the Gustus L. Larson Memorial Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 1983; and Fellow Awards from the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering in 1988 and in 1991. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1987.
 Raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, Pipes earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1964. He earned a master's degree in structural engineering at Princeton in 1969, and a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington in 1972.
 Pipes' election to the GenCorp board brings the number of directors to eleven. GenCorp is a technology-based company with strong positions in aerospace, automotive and related polymer products.
