GELMAN SCIENCES SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT TO CREATE JOINT-VENTURE COMPANY IN PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

 ANN ARBOR, Mich., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Gelman Sciences Inc. (AMEX: GSC) announced today that it has signed a letter of intent to create a joint-venture company in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, to serve the growing China market for microfiltration products.
 The company, to be named Shanghai-Gelman Filter Co. Ltd., will be jointly owned by Ji Cheng Filter Factory, Shanghai, and Gelman Sciences, Ann Arbor. The company will manufacture membrane filters and cartridges, primarily for sale to the pharmaceutical industry. The Shanghai company will contribute plant, property, equipment, and cash in the value of $7 million. Gelman Sciences will contribute technology, equipment, and marketing expertise. Gelman Sciences will own 45 percent of the company. The partners have agreed that the approximate value of the joint-venture company is $14 million. The joint-venture company will be located in Jin Shan Township, near Shanghai. Ji Cheng Filter Factory manufactures and markets cartridges using equipment and technology which they purchased from Gelman Sciences.
 Company officials said that the approximate schedule for the development of the new joint-venture company is to have definitive agreements by mid-August and government approval by October 1993.
