GELMAN SCIENCES REPORTS NET LOSS FOR THIRD QUARTER
 RESULTING FROM ENVIRONMENTAL CHARGE
ANN ARBOR, Mich., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Gelman Sciences Inc. (AMEX: GSC) today reported net sales of $20.9 million for the third quarter of its fiscal year ended April 30, 1992, increasing from $20.1 million in the third quarter one year prior. The company had a net loss of $1.95 million or $.77 per share vs. a net loss of $210,000 or $.08 per share for the third quarter of the previous year. Contributing to the loss was a $4 million charge for the anticipated settlement of two environmental lawsuits with the State of Michigan.
The accounting treatment of the environmental cleanup program requires that a charge for the total cost of the program be recorded in the current quarter, however, the cash outflow associated with the cleanup program costs will occur over the expected length of the cleanup program, approximately 10 years. The after-tax effect on earnings of this one-time charge is $2.6 million or $1.01 per share. Excluding the charge, the company would have reported third-quarter net earnings of $608,000 or $.24 per share as compared to the $.08 loss per share for the third quarter last year.
Sales for the nine-month period increased 6 percent to $60.1 million as compared with $56.8 million for the same period of the prior year. Net loss for the first nine months was $1.85 million or $.73 per share vs. a net profit of $150,000 or $.06 per share for the same period of the prior year. Without the environmental settlement charge, nine-month earnings would have been $715,000 or $.28 per share.
"We are pleased with our operating performance for the third quarter, said Charles Gelman, chairman and chief executive officer. "It sends out a message to shareholders and employees that we are making progress in our serious efforts to manage the company for growth and profitability."
The company's sales have been particularly strong for the nine-month period in the laboratory and industrial process markets in the United States with an increase of 18 percent over the prior year. International sales continued their growth trend, except for sales in Australia, which declined $1.1 million for the nine-month period.
Gelman Sciences is a leading manufacturer and marketer of microfiltration products for use in laboratories, process industries and the health-care field.
