GEICO OFFERS VACATION TRAVEL TIPS FOR PARENTS

WASHINGTON, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Your children have been looking forward to the family's vacation for weeks, bragging to their friends about where they are going and how much fun they are going to have. But they won't be looking forward to the hours they have to sit in the car in order to get to their glorious vacation spot.
"Restless children riding in a car for hours can create distractions," says Noel Chandonnet, senior vice president at Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO). "That's more than an annoyance; drivers whose attention is drawn away from the road to deal with unruly kids can wreak havoc on the highway."
Chandonnet offers the following suggestions to help parents and children get through a long trip safely.
-- Allow time for children to get out of the car and stretch every couple of hours. A 10-minute break can work wonders to relieve restlessness.
-- Take along some books, crayons, paper and a favorite toy that is appropriate for play in the car.
-- Count anything -- red trucks, cows, exit signs, bridges. Or look for colors, numbers or letters on signs or license plates.
-- Bring along plenty of low-sugar snacks like raisins, crackers, nuts, carrots and something to drink.
-- Keep a wet rag in a plastic bag or bring along some pre-packaged moist towelettes for easy cleanup.
-- Dress your children comfortably for inside-the-car temperature -- you might let them take their shoes off.
-- To make sure your trip is a safe one, make sure all young children are restrained properly in child safety seats and older children and adults keep their seat belts fastened.
