GEICO CORP. ELECTS NEW BOARD MEMBER; PROMOTES TWO CORPORATE OFFICERS
 WASHINGTON, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of GEICO Corp. (NYSE: GEC) has elected A. James Clark, chairman and president of Clark Enterprises Inc., Bethesda, Md., a director of the corporation and promoted two corporate officers.
 W. Alvon Sparks Jr. was named executive vice president and chief financial officer and Thomas M. Wells was named a group vice president.
 In addition to serving as chairman and president of Clark Enterprises Inc., Clark is a member of the board of directors of Martin Marietta and the Potomac Electric Power Company. He also is a member of the University of Maryland Foundation and serves on the board of trustees of Johns Hopkins University and George Washington University. Clark holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Maryland and was awarded an honorary doctorate of engineering from that school in 1992.
 Sparks most recently served as a senior vice president of GEICO Corp. and its largest subsidiary, Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO), with responsibility for the treasurer, controller, internal audit, investor relations, planning and financial reporting functions. In addition to his new responsibilities, he will continue to serve as chairman or president of several corporate affiliates.
 Sparks joined GEICO in 1978 as a vice president with responsibility for corporate financial reporting. Prior to working for GEICO, he held various management positions with the American Finance Management Corp., the Susquehanna Corp., Jacobs Transfer Inc. and Price Waterhouse and Company. Sparks is a graduate of the University of Delaware with a B.S. in accounting and is a certified public accountant.
 Wells joined GEICO in 1980 with responsibility for corporate financial reporting. In 1985 he was named vice president and controller for GEICO Corp. Prior to working for GEICO, he held progressively responsible positions with Ernst and Whinney.
 Wells is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. in accounting. He has been a certified public accountant since 1973.
