GEC SENSORS INC. SELECTS MCDONNELL DOUGLAS
TO DESIGN AND BUILD LASER SYSTEMS
MCLEAN, Va., Dec. 11, 1991 /PRNewswire/ -- GEC Sensors, Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia has selected McDonnell Douglas Electronic Systems Co. to design and build two laser systems for GEC's AC-130U Gunship All Light Level Television System.
The first laser, a Laser Target Designator/Rangefinder (LTD/R), provides range data for gunfire accuracy and provides a laser spot for smart weapons to use as a beacon. This laser is the first of its kind to be used in a tactical application. It is a diode-pumped solid-state laser that uses air cooling and high efficiency laser diodes. The McDonnell Douglas LTD/R is smaller in size and weight and is more reliable and efficient than conventional flashlamp-pumped systems.
The second system, a Gated Laser Illuminator for Night Television (GLINT), employs the same laser diode technology to produce a laser spotlight for night operations. The GLINT is synchronized with a low-light-level camera to provide the Gunship operators with clear pictures on a pitch black night. The GLINT sends a virtually invisible beam of laser light to illuminate ground scenes.
McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) produces the laser diodes which are the cornerstones of both of these laser systems. McDonnell Douglas has been one of the world's leaders in manufacturing laser diodes since the mid 1970's.
The production units will start to roll out in early 1992. GEC has ordered 14 of each laser system. The contract is worth $10.6 million over three years.
