GE MEDICAL SYSTEMS AND ADVANCED NMR ANNOUNCE NEXT PHASE OF SALES AND MARKETING PROGRAM

WILMINGTON, Mass., Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- Advanced NMR Systems (NASDAQ: ANMR), the industry leader in high-speed Echo Planar Imaging (EPI) technology, and General Electric Medical Systems (GEMS), today announced the next phase of their agreement relating to sales of Advanced NMR's InstaScan technology for research and clinical use by GE Medical Systems Signa(tm) customers. Under terms of an oral agreement, GEMS and Advanced NMR will be offering an integrated approach to customers that will provide Advanced NMR's InstaScan capabilities today and an upgrade path to GE's version of EPI technology, currently a work- in-progress.
"GE Medical System's inclusion of InstaScan as part of a two-step option to their Signa system allows Signa customers to migrate to next- generation MRI technology, and reinforces Advanced NMR's leadership position in Echo Planar systems," said Bill Voorheis, president, Advanced NMR Systems, Inc.
As a result of the new agreement, Signa customers interested in implementing Echo Planar technology on their system can either purchase InstaScan directly from Advanced NMR Systems or acquire it from GEMS with the option to upgrade to the GE EPI version when available. Advanced NMR Systems will sell InstaScan to GE Medical Systems, on terms similar to a distribution agreement, and GEMS will service InstaScan as part of a customer's total Signa installation and maintain the system to Advanced NMR's specifications. Advanced NMR will provide installation, training, applications and scientific support as required beyond the initial turnover training.
GE Medical Systems develops and markets the Signa line of conventional MRI systems. Currently, there are more than 1,200 worldwide Signa installations. Advanced NMR develops and sells InstaScan, a high-speed retrofit accessory for conventional MRI systems, which accelerates imaging acquisition of an MRI system by up to 20,000 times. InstaScan, Advanced NMR System's implementation of Echo Planar Imaging technology, utilizes rapidly oscillating gradients to spatially encode MRI signals, and allows a series of "freeze frame" images to be generated from a single electronic pulse. This capability makes it possible to obtain high quality images of moving body parts.
"Our strategic relationship with Advanced NMR Systems affords us the opportunity to respond to the immediate needs of customers to utilize Echo Planar Technology and at the same time, provide an upgrade path to the GE Echo Planar Imaging platform currently under development," said Paul Mirabella, general manager, GE Medical Systems MR Department.
Advanced NMR Systems, a Wilmington, Mass.-based public company founded in 1983, is a leader in the development and manufacture of sophisticated MRI technology for use in research and clinical applications.
