GCSE GIRLS ON TOP IN EXAM WAR OF SEXES.

Girls swept to victory in the battle of the sexes in this year's GCSE results.

Just one all-boys' school crept into the top ten in the Mirror's league table of the leading 100 state schools.

The other nine were all girls-only schools.

And the only three schools to notch up a remarkable 100 per cent of top A to C grade passes were all single-sex girls' schools. David Triplow, acting head of one of them, Parkstone Grammar School for Girls in Dorset, said yesterday: "We are jumping up and down with joy."

More than half the school's GCSEs were either A-star or A grades.

Pupil Elizabeth Clarke, 16, who got eight A-star grades and two B's, said: "I hoped to do well, but I wasn't expecting this.

"We've worked hard during the year and we've had a lot of support from the school."

Meanwhile, the girls from Newport County High School in Shropshire were celebrating a record last night.

For the fifth year running, every single candidate got five or more A to C passes - the marker which is traditionally used by the government to rank schools.

One of the successful pupils, Emma Phillips, aged 16, who got four A grades and six B's, said: "I'm really pleased with my grades. When I came out of the exam, I wasn't really sure how I'd done."

But one of the country's most successful GCSE students doesn't officially exist according to the government.

Fifteen-year-old Nilu Kumar, of Caistor Grammar School, Lincs, got a staggering 11 A-star grades in her GCSE exams.

But her success won't count towards this year's exam league tables - because she is too young!

And Nilu's headmaster Roger Hale said last night she was the most successful GCSE student in the history of the school.

Doug McAvoy, boss of Britain's biggest teachers' union, the NUT, said: "This just shows the foolishness of the government's league tables.

"They don't even record some of the schools' outstanding successes, let alone the problems many have achieving them."

But there were dozens of other astonishing results which WERE officially recognised.

Twins Matthew and Jonathan Beatham from Colchester Royal Grammar School in Essex, each got 11 A-grades in their exams.

The two 16-year-olds learned of their success while holidaying in France.

And two 16-year-old girls from King Edward VI Handsworth School in Birmingham, Lula Sheena and Helen Williams, both scored 10 GCSE passes at the top A-star grade.

In Kent, one pupil at Tonbridge School topped even that performance.

Robert Harland, 16, passed 11 GCSEs with A-star grades. Elsewhere, age was no bar to success. Northwood Computer Tutorial College, a private school in north west London, put 40 pupils in for GCSEs in computing - the oldest was 15, the youngest aged just nine.

Meanwhile, identical twins Victoria and Charlotte Maltby scored exactly the same results in their 10 GCSEs.

The 16-year-olds notched up nine A grades and one B in the same subjects.

They were astonished when they opened their exam envelopes together at Colyton Grammar School in East Devon.

Now they plan to do the same four A levels in the sixth form.

Stunned Victoria said: "We couldn't believe the results when we saw them, but we both worked very hard and we are delighted."

The teenagers chose their subjects independently from each other two years ago - but were surprised when they discovered that all ten subjects matched up.

And Ronan Astin, from Timperley, Greater Manchester, was today celebrating a clean sweep of 11 GCSE passes - all at the top grade A-star.

But it runs in the family ...

The 16-year-old pupil of St Ambrose College in Altrincham, notched up his success just a week after his brother, Ciaran, scored five grade As at A-level.

Now the pressure is on younger brother, Jarlath, 15, to make it an A- team family hat-trick when he sits his GCSEs at the same school next year.
