BEDFORD, Mass., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- GCC Technologies(R) today announced new ColorTone(TM) 2.0 software for its ColorTone dye- sublimation printer. With version 2.0 GCC has added PostScript(R) Level 2 compatibility, as well as improvements in color management, printing performance, font rendering, and Windows(TM) support. ColorTone 2.0 will be offered as an upgrade to GCC's installed base, and will also ship with all new ColorTone printers.
The new update provides PostScript Level 2 features, such as: sophisticated color management through Color Rendering Dictionaries (CRDs): support for Kanji and other composite fonts; compression filters for faster transmission of images; improved pattern support; and better memory management. Access to these new PostScript Level 2 features are provided through Apple's new LaserWriter 8.0 PostScript Level 2 driver software and ColorTone PostScript Printer Definition (PPD) files, all of which are included with the 2.0 software. A new ColorTone Windows driver improves performance for Windows applications.
In addition to the color management included with PostScript, EfiColor(R) and ColorSense(R) color management systems are also available, providing exceptional screen-to-print color accuracy. "Since the introduction of GCC's first color output device two years ago, we have been working with our customers on their color management issues, and we have found that color matching is one of the color user's primary concerns," explained Jim Herrmann, GCC's ColorTone Product Manager.
"Customers are demanding matching precision in their color work," stated Eric Broadbent, GCC's color scientist. "GCC is pleased to provide EfiColor and ColorSense compatibility toward this end." EfiColor profiles can be purchased from Electronics For Imaging. ColorSense profiles for the ColorTone printer are available from Eastman Kodak.
ColorTone 2.0 includes also ColorTone Express(TM), a Photoshop(TM) export module which dramatically reduces the printing time required for all Photoshop images. With GCC's exclusive Express Mode printing, full page, 300 DPI images print in less than five minutes across an EtherTalk(R) network. "Express Mode printing provides the performance normally associated with 'direct connect printing' to everyone on the network", said Herrmann. "For the first time, anyone on an EtherTalk network can print Photoshop images extremely quickly, which saves significant time when preparing images for final copy."
Other performance enhancements have also been included in ColorTone version 2.0 software. PostScript rendering is 50 percent faster for most print jobs and EtherTalk performance has been improved three-fold. In addition, a built-in TrueType(R) renderer dramatically reduces the time to print TrueType fonts.
Customers can purchase the ColorTone 2.0 software upgrade for their existing printers, including updated manuals and documentation, for $199 (U.S.). This upgrade is available from any of GCC's hundreds of Authorized Resellers in the U.S. and Canada, as well as directly from GCC by calling 800-422-7777. In Canada call 800-263-1405.
