GCC Open badminton set to start.

THE Travelex-Western Union-Indian Club GCC Open Badminton Tournament 2011 is set to commence today at the club's premises in Gudaibiya with a total prize money of $2,250 up for grabs.

More than 100 players from the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are taking part in the event to be held over the next three days.

Competition will be held in six categories - men's singles and doubles, mixed doubles, veterans doubles, under-19 boys singles and under-19 boys doubles.

Top players in the fray include Jaffer Ibrahim, Heri Setiawan, Jayakumar, Ricson Rebello, Anto, Unnikrishnan, Nahaz Omar, Madhu Menon, Jayashree Nair, Shalini Shetty and Neelam Singh.

This year's event is being held under the patronage of the President of the Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation Shaikh Hussam bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Today's fixtures:

Under-19 boys Singles: 6pm - Vishnu Sivakumar vs Kevin Tony; Arjun Karnavar vs Vidyut ; 6.30pm: Vishal vs Vishnu Sivadas; Sanjay Jaimy vs Gulsher.

Mens singles: 7pm - Jaffer Ebrahim vs Hary Unnithan; Dilshad Kamal vs Joseph Joy; 7.30pm: Sunil vs Heri Setiawan.

Under-19 boys doubles: 7.30pm - George K Laji/Rohit Jaykumar vs George Abraham/Alex Abraham; 8pm: Ashok Gopinath/Kurian George vs Nadeem Nahas/Sanjay Jaimy.

Mixed doubles: 8pm - Jayakumar/Sathi Jayakumar vs Jaffer Ebrahim/Shalini Shetty; 8.30pm: Heri Setiawan/Rehana vs Elmer/Novie Omana.

Men's doubles: 8.30pm - Nishant/Rajesh A C vs Anil O M/Babu Vadakkan; Satheesh G/Suresh Kumar vs Ajesh/Mujeeb; 9pm: Regi P/Anup vs Ashok Gopinath/Jajang; Khalid Jaffal/Filmark Bugna vs Anto K/Jain N S; 9.30pm: Sunil/Tony C K vs Madhu Menon/Subhash; Thulasi/Arun Jose vs Ashley G/Prashob R; 10pm: Jaykumar P/Shailesh C vs Sunil/Binoj Ommen; Babu Varghese/Simin Sasi vs Shanil/Kurien George; 10.30pm: Hary Unnithan/Joseph Joy vs Jaimy John/Priyan Meledath.
