GCAA hosts ICAO Dangerous Goods Panel Meeting in Abu Dhabi.

Summary: International specialists to ensure safe and secure air transportation throughout the world .

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is hosting the International Civil Aviation Organization's Dangerous Goods Panel Meeting from 7th till 11th of November 2010 at the Park Rotana Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

Representatives in this meeting include specialists in the field of transporting dangerous goods and aviation representatives from various organizations such as International Air Transport Association (IATA), Global express association, Dangerous Goods Advisory Council, International Federation of Airline Pilots Association, with the presence of Dr.

Katherine Rooney; ICAO Dangerous Goods Program Manager.

Omar Bin Ghalib Deputy Director General of the UAE GCAA welcomed the UAE's guests in his opening speech.

He stressed on the importance of the meeting to promote better understanding in aviation safety and security.

"We all are aware of the fact that dangerous goods are carried regularly by air all over the world, it is our responsibility to ensure safety and security of all types' air transportation while giving highest priority" Bin Ghaib said.

He added "It is also acknowledged that safety and security is a shared responsibility.

As such, in keeping with ICAO's mandate, to oversee the global safety and security of the air transportation system, GCAA as the state civil authority, is committed to make the travel safe and secure for all.

Accordingly, our safety and security specialists play an important role to regulate for safety and security.

In keeping with ANNEX 18 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation".

"As one of the ICAO Contracting States and a member of the ICAO Council, I would like to assure you that United Arab Emirates takes matters pertaining to safe transportation of dangerous goods by air very seriously.

It will always our sincere intention to work closely with ICAO and Contracting States in all fields including Dangerous Goods.

United Arab Emirates is, indeed, honoured to host this important Dangerous Goods Panel Meeting in Abu Dhabi.

Holding this important event in Abu Dhabi is symbolic of UAE's commitment to provide a leading role in the field of air transportation of dangerous goods in the region" Deputy Director General of GCAA, concluded.

Hamad Al Muhairi, Chief Aviation Security and the nominated dangerous goods panel member, represents the UAE GCAA in this meeting with participation of Mr.

P Balasubramaniam.

from Emirates Airlines, and Mr.

Paul king from Etihad Airways.

Subjects of importance will be discussed during this meeting such as the technical instructions for the safe transport of dangerous goods by air, development of proposals for amendments to Annex 18, the safe transport of dangerous goods by Air, amendments to the emergency guidance for aircraft incidents involving dangerous goods, and review of provisions for dangerous goods relating to batteries, and other related issues.

The meeting is held following the GCAA's continuous efforts to ensure safe and secure carriage of dangerous goods and implementation of the highest safety and security standards given to its important role in the regional aviation industry.

The UAE had been nominated to host the current ICAO dangerous goods panel emergency meeting during the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Dangerous Goods Panel (DGP) Meeting of the Working Group which was held in Montreal, Canada, between 5th - 16th Oct 2009.

The GCAA proposed to host emergency meetings, as and when required, to discuss urgent issues related to dangerous goods.
