GATX CAPITAL REPORTS SPECIAL INCREASE TO RESERVES

GATX CAPITAL REPORTS SPECIAL INCREASE TO RESERVES
CHICAGO, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- GATX Corp. (NYSE: GMT) said that

its financial services subsidiary, GATX Capital Corp., is making a provision to its loss reserve of $60 million. This increase primarily reflects continuing deterioration in two areas of GATX Capital's portfolio, freighter aircraft and real estate. The company has previously stated that GATX Capital was conducting a review of the adequacy of its loss reserve, which was $73 million at the end of the second quarter.
James J. Glasser, chairman of GATX Corp., stated, "The length of the current recession has significantly reduced demand for freighter aircraft throughout the world. Similarly, we have been experiencing weakness in certain real estate markets, particularly in southern California where the local economy continues to deteriorate. Under the circumstances, we considered it prudent to increase our loss reserves by an amount sufficient to cover any losses we could reasonably foresee.
"The balance of GATX Capital's portfolio remains strong and is positioned to provide ongoing operating earnings and disposition gains. However, GATX's current outlook toward 1993 is lower than year-ago expectations as we have experienced no improvement in the overall economic climate."
With the special increase to the loss provision, GATX will report a loss for the third quarter. Combined with the FASB 106 and 109 adjustments of $43 million recorded in the first quarter, GATX expects to report a loss for the year.
GATX Corp. is a $3.5 billion service-based asset company which provides capital equipment and related services for use in various domestic and international markets. Customers utilize GATX' rail, aircraft, bulk liquid storage terminals, pipelines, logistics support and warehousing, and shipping assets to operate their businesses on a daily basis. GATX Corp. (GMT) is listed on the New York, London, and other stock exchanges.
The management of GATX and GATX Capital will host a teleconference at 2 p.m. CDT, today, to discuss this press release. If you would like to participate in this teleconference, please call 1-800-788-2392.
