GATORADE ANNOUNCES NATION'S BEST PREP BASEBALL PLAYER

MIAMI, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Gatorade Circle of Champions National Baseball Player of the Year was announced today by The Gatorade Co. and Scholastic Coach magazine.
The award, based on overall athletic and academic performance throughout high school, distinguishes the winner as the best prep baseball player in the nation. There are 46 state winners, including Washington, D.C. (five states have no formal baseball programs). These winners are then narrowed to eight regional winners, and finally, one national winner. These winners are made by the Gatorade National Advisory Board comprised of 10 national and regional sports writers.
Named today as the "1993 Gatorade Circle of Champions National Baseball Player of the Year" was Alex Rodriguez, a senior shortstop at Westminster Christian School, Miami. Rodriguez was previously chosen as the Florida and Southern Region Player of the Year. He is the third Floridian to receive national Gatorade baseball honors (Brian Barber, 91/Dr. Phillips/Orlando and Gary Sheffield, 86/Hillsborough/Tampa).
The 6'3", 190-pound shortstop led his team to a district championship and a 28-5 record by hitting .505 and slugging .712, the pre-season All-American had 36 RBI, 11 doubles, six triples, nine home runs and stole 35 bases in 35 attempts.
Regional winners of the "1993 Gatorade Circle of Champions" award are: Matt Brunson (Mountain Region/Colo./Cherry Creek High, Englewood); Derrek Lee (Pacific Region/Calif./El Camino High, Sacramento); Chris Schwab (Central Region/Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall High, St. Paul); Chris Carpenter (New England Region/N.H./Trinity Hall, Manchester); Jamey Wright (Southwest Region/Okla./Westmoore Hall, Oklahoma City); and Scott Hunter (Mid-Atlantic Region/Pa./Northeast High, Philadelphia).
