GATEWAY 2000 REDEFINES 'ENTRY LEVEL PC' IMPROVES PERFORMANCE
 AND LOWERS PRICE POINTS
NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Gateway 2000 today redefined "entry-level PC" with its newly designed 486SX/25 system priced at $1,495. The company also introduced a new 486/33 computer for $1,995. both of these systems feature new integrated motherboards in a mini desktop case.
"We feel the 486SX/25 is the entry-level PC now; it's what people should be buying," said Gateway 2000 President Ted Waitt. "Over 90 percent of our customers buy Intel-based 486's because they want upgradability and need at least this level of performance to run Windows must effectively. Therefore, we have committed ourselves to the 486 processors. As a result, we are now leading the 486 market."
The 4SX-25 comes with 4MB of RAM, a 170MB hard drive, two floppy drives, a 14-inch CrystalScan color monitor, DOS 5, Windows 3.1 and MS Works for Windows. "It's definitely the best value out there for less than $1,500," said Waitt.
The 4DX-33 comes with 4MB of RAM, a 00MB hard drive, two floppy drives, a 14-inch CrystalScan color monitor, Dos 5, Windows 3.1 and a choice of application software. It costs $1.995.

 High Performance, Exceptional Prices
The newly designed, integrated motherboards in the mini desktops offer high performance in a small form factor with exceptional prices.
"A lot of our customers want a 486 machine in a small form factor," said Waitt. "So we designed this new, integrated motherboard which allows us to house 486s in our sleek, mini desktop case. These are great machines with fast video, extremely high performance local bus hard drives and five available expansion slots. And by using an integrated board design, we are able to offer these feature-packed systems at unbelievably low prices."
The new integrated board does not sacrifice performance for size. To lower costs yet add value, the new board uses an integrated chipset and on-board video with a video coprocessor for graphics acceleration. This video card is even faster than the ATI Graphics Ultra previously incorporated in Gateway 486 systems. A new local bus hard drive interface is enhanced by Gateway's RIDE (Rapid Integrated Drive Electronics) Bios. This combination of feature allows the user to take full advantage of an extremely fast IDE hard drive subsystem.
"The result is a high-performance system with all the features previously available only in the highest end systems. By integrating the chip set and video card and featuring the new local bus hard drive, these systems are affordable and powerful. Nothing else in the market right now comes close to them in terms of performance, features and price," Waitt added.
Business As Usual: Increase Value, Decrease Cost
"At Gateway, we are continuing to do business as usual: Increasing value and performance while decreasing costs. We redesigned these mini desktops without changing our business model and not in response to what other companies are doing," said Waitt. "What's more, we didn't cut features or quality. We think people don't necessarily want the cheapest computer available. They want more for their money, not less. So that's what we give them."
