GATEWAY 2000 CONTINUES TO SUCCEED IN THE TURBULENT PC INDUSTRY; RECORD REVENUE AND EARNING ANNOUNCED FOR THE THIRD QUARTER

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., Nov. 30 ~PRNewswire~ -- Once again, Gateway 2000 has posted another quarterly increase despite the turbulence in the PC industry, the company announced today. In third quarter ended Sept. 30, the company shipped 104,000 systems for $267.8 million in revenue, up 7.7 percent from the $248.6 million from second quarter, and up 53.9 percent from $174 million from the same period last year. This brings the annual revenue total to $753.4 million.
In addition, the privately-held company's pretax earnings were up 6.1 percent over the second quarter, and up 50 percent from the same period last year.
"We did a lot during this quarter which may have held down a our revenue," said Gateway 2000 President Ted Waitt. "First, we successfully introduced and started shipping a number of new products, to which the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
"We also completed a 250,000 square-foot facility and moved production, shipping, technical support and product development into it.
"Now that we have our new products in place and the new facility in operation, we expect our fourth quarter to be even stronger than the third."
HIRING 300 NEW EMPLOYEES BY YEAR'S END
Gateway 2000 also recently announced plans to hire 300 new employees by the year's end.
"While many computer companies have had to let people go to improve their financial positions, we need to hire more to keep up with our growth and enable us to continue providing high-quality products at outstanding prices along with excellent service," said Waitt. "We plan to add people in sales, product development, customer service, technical support, manufacturing, inventory and shipping."
