GATES ENERGY PRODUCTS UNVEILS FIRST BRANDED
 NICKEL-HYDRIDE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES
BOSTON, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Gates Energy Products/Portable Battery Division, Gainesville, Fla., today formally launched the first branded, nickel-hydride rechargeable battery product line at ELECTRO, an electronics industry trade show held this week in Boston. Marketed under the brand name HYDRITECH(TM), this new battery is the first rechargeable to offer 25 percent more power than the premium nickel- cadmium cells currently used in laptop computers, cellular phones and other portable electronics products.
"Since HYDRITECH is marketed exclusively to consumer electronics product manufacturers, you won't be seeing it on local retailer shelves anytime soon," said Ralph Millard, manager of marketing for Gates Energy Products/Portable Battery Division. "However, as product designers specify HYDRITECH for many newer laptop computers, cellular phones and other portable electronics products, consumers will experience first-hand the superior performance of rechargeable nickel- hydride batteries."
The full line of HYDRITECH batteries was designed in response to consumers' demands for specific product improvements in portable computing and portable cellular products. Further substantiating HYDRITECH's development was recent research, sponsored by Gates Energy, into consumer attitudes toward rechargeable batteries in portable electronics such as laptop computers and cellular phones. The research revealed that users of these devices wanted lightweight, long-running batteries. In fact, increased run-time was the most frequently mentioned battery performance improvement desired by participants in the research survey. Respondents also indicated they wanted fast recharging ability. Directly addressing these consumer desires, Gates Energy's HYDRITECH batteries offer all of these features but at a premium price -- about twice the cost of nickel- cadmium batteries in the early product offering.
"Designing a rechargeable that offers premium performance and increased run-time is significant especially when you consider the amount of legislation pending across the country limiting battery contents and dictating disposal methods," said Millard. "Because nickel-hydride does not contain cadmium, it is generally considered more environmentally acceptable and may eventually replace nickel-cadmium as the rechargeable technology of choice."
Gates Energy Products is the first and only full-line manufacturer of nickel-hydride rechargeable batteries in North America and is one of the top three manufacturers of sealed, rechargeable batteries in the world. The company offers extensive marketing and technical assistance to OEMs designing products utilizing Gates Energy's rechargeable battery technologies.
