GARY WILBER ANNOUNCES PLANS TO STEP DOWN FROM DRUG EMPORIUM AND BOARD POSITIONS

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Gary Wilber, vice chairman of Drug Emporium, Inc. (NASDAQ: DEMP), told the company's board of directors at their regular meeting yesterday that he intends to step down from his vice chairman position effective April 29, 1994, and not stand for reelection to the board when his term expires in June.
Wilber said his decision, which is strictly personal and health related, "reflects in no way on the company. In fact, I have the greatest confidence in the current direction of Drug Emporium, its long- term prospects, its management and its board of directors," he said.
David L. Kriegel, Drug Emporium's chairman and chief executive officer, noted that Gary Wilber has been an officer and director of the company since its founding in 1977 and served as chief executive officer from January 1990 to December 1992.
"We are indebted to Gary for his continuing contributions to the board and to the success of this company," Kriegel said. "We appreciate his willingness to stay and conclude several major projects and will miss his daily presence. He is truly a fine gentleman and a positive influence on all of us."
Senior Vice President Robert E. Lyons added, "Gary Wilber has been a strong, influential leader not only here at Drug Emporium, but also for the entire chain drug industry. He will be missed by all of the employees at Drug Emporium."
