 GARY H. BECHTEL APPOINTED TO PROJECT CALIFORNIA PANEL
 SAN FRANCISCO, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The following announcement

was made today by the Bechtel Group Inc.:
 Gary H. Bechtel, president of Bechtel Civil Co., has been appointed by the California Council on Service and Technology to serve on its Project California Select-Panel.
 Bechtel, 41, joins a distinguished group of business, education, labor and government leaders who will work to implement Project California, an initiative backed by Gov. Wilson and the State Legislature. Its goal is to help establish California as a world leader in high-performance, environmentally safe, advanced transportation systems for people, goods and information. The group will focus on infrastructure and telecommunications research and development.
 Bechtel is currently responsible for the company's surface transportation, aviation services, water resources and buildings and infrastructure business units. He also serves as a senior vice president of Bechtel Corp. and as a director of Bechtel Group Inc.
 Based in San Francisco, Bechtel has a diverse background in California transportation projects such as the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, San Francisco's MUNI Metro turnaround, Los Angeles Metrorail's communication system, and Interstate-680 expansion. International transportation projects include Eurotunnel, Haneda Airport, Turkey's Ankara-Gerede motorway, and Hong Kong's new airport works development.
 Project California's chairman is Roy Anderson, chairman emeritus of Lockheed Corp., and its vice chairman is Dr. Malcolm Currie, chairman emeritus of Hughes Aircraft Co.
 Activities that Project California will focus on include:
 -- Development of electric and semi-electric vehicles;
 -- Design and construction of "smart highways;"
 -- Development of a master plan for creating high speed
 transportation systems that link California's major cities;
 -- Design and construction of manufacturing facilities to produce
 the personal vehicles and mass transportation systems of the
 future;
 -- Construction of efficient and environmentally safe energy source
 infrastructure for these transportation systems; and
 -- Installation of high tech "communication highways" to encourage
 Californians to commute electronically rather than traveling on
 over-burdened roads.
 The California Council on Service and Technology is an alliance of the state's major public and private research and instructional universities, as well as representative industry leaders. The council addresses issues that significantly affect science and technology, economic competitiveness and quality of life in California.
