GART BROS. SPORTING GOODS ANNOUNCES SUPERSTORE IN AURORA, COLO.

DENVER, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Gart Bros. Sporting Goods Co. announced today the signing of a lease for its first suburban superstore in Aurora, Colo. The one-level, 55,000 square-foot store is scheduled to open in November 1993 and will be called Gart Sports Superstore. The new store (previously Phar-Mor) is located on more than four acres at the northwest corner of Sable and Exposition. Gart Bros.' flagship store in the 100,000 square-foot Sportscastle located at 1000 Broadway, near downtown Denver.
The superstore will offer a comprehensive merchandise assortment with more than 100,000 items, representing more than 2,000 manufacturers. The store will include extensive fishing, hunting, camping, golf, tennis, ski, athletic shoes and apparel and athletic equipment departments. In addition, this store will also offer complete repair and servicing of sporting goods equipment with ski and snowboard tuning, tennis racket and golf club repair, bike set-up, tuning and repair, rollerblade repair and baseball glove relacing. The Repair Shop and Ski Rental Shop have been designed with a separate entrance to allow customers greater convenience and extended hours. Encouraging customers to "try before they buy," there will be three demonstration areas for golf putting, golf driving and rollerblading.
"Gart Bros. will continue to provide the best value on the finest name brands such as Nike, Rossignol, Nordica, Bogner, Callaway, Head, Titleist, Browning, Colt, Smith & Wesson, The North Face, Slumberjack, Eureka, Coleman, Rawlings and Wilson," said John R. Chase, Gart Bros. president and chief executive officer. "To give customers the best possible service, each department will be staffed with sales representatives who possess special talents or expertise in that area. In addition, new cash registers will be installed in order to offer fast customer check-out. These same cash registers are now being installed in all Gart Bros. stores. Installation will be complete in all stores before Christmas.
"We are very excited to bring the low prices, enormous assortment and expert service of the downtown Denver Sportscastle to the suburbs," said Chase. "We will maintain the unique quality of the downtown Sportscastle and will position it to be a destination shop for local and out-of-town customers." Gart Bros. was first in the region to introduce the sporting goods superstore with the Sportscastle near downtown Denver in 1972 and subsequently opened the Sportscastle in Salt Lake City in 1987.
"Our goal is to aggressively grow in the Rocky Mountain region," said Chase. The Aurora superstore will be the first of five planned Gart Sports Superstores to circle the greater metropolitan area. "These superstores, together with Gart's existing mall stores, which will be remodeled to put more emphasis on the shoe and apparel categories, will reinforce our commitment to service the sporting goods needs of the greater metropolitan Denver area," Chase said.
The Aurora superstore opening follows the recent announcement to open 10 additional stores in Utah and Idaho this fall. With these additional 11 stores, Gart Bros. will operate 58 locations.
