GARICK CORPORATION FEATURED AS SOUTHWEST AIRLINES FREQUENT FLYER

CLEVELAND, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Garick Corporation is featured in the December issue of Spirit, Southwest Airlines' magazine. The Garick Corporation is a leading bulk landscape and nursery supplier throughout the United States, based in Cleveland.
The Garick Corporation has utilized Southwest Airlines as a means of transporting its sales staff to the company's new and expanding territories. Wherever Southwest expands, the Garick Corporation has been able to expand its territory, economically taking low-cost travel into consideration.
Following is the text of the article by Melanie Jones which appeared in the December 1993 issue of Spirit:
 THE GARICK CORPORATION
With Southwest's aid, a Cleveland company distributes --
 and saves -- "green"
When Gary Trinetti and Rick Mahoney formed The Garick Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1980, their goal was to provide bulk landscaping mulch to Cleveland and surrounding areas.
With steady expansion into cities such as St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Houston, New Orleans, Chicago, and Baltimore, Garick has grown into one of the most well-recognized names in the "green" industries, servicing landscape contractors, nurseries, garden centers, and golf courses throughout the Midwest with mulch, stone, timbers, and tool supplies.
Garick expanded into fifteen states and has established twenty-two bulk terminal facilities, set up within the last two-and-a-half years, with fifteen being established in the past eighteen months.
But there was a problem. "Our priority is to always have our sales force based in Cleveland," he says. "But it was costly in either time or dollars for them to reach their territories across the Midwest. Southwest's Cleveland service has brought a welcome solution.
"We now have a sales meeting on Monday morning, after which each member of the sales team can get on a Southwest flight to their destination and be there by late afternoon or early the next morning. The flights to the East Coast used to cost around $500 round trip -- now we are paying under $100 round trip on Southwest to Baltimore."
Garick also has a unique method of expansion: "Whenever Southwest Airlines announces a new city, I look at the feasibility of expanding there," says Trinetti. "When the company announced Baltimore, we were ready. We ship our products via waterway, and Southwest services many cities along the major rivers in the U.S., including Baltimore. So it fit the profile of a city we wanted to serve. You might say we used the oldest form of transportation to ship our product and the most modern form to transport our people.
"Our philosophy is much like that of Herb Kelleher's," says Trinetti. "Take care of your employees, and they will offer great service to your Customers. And the best method of advertising is through our Customers."
