GARDENING: Gardening Chores.

Continue to harvest fruit and vegetables.

Plant trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants and alpines.

Transplant shrubs if you need to re-locate them to another spot.

Clear fallen leaves and debris, which provide a haven for pests and diseases.

If you haven't yet done so, protect tender perennials from frost by taking them indoors or covering them with horticultural fleece at night.

Lift tubers such as dahlias and clean and store them for the winter.

Examine prepared bulbs in bowls standing in a cool dark room and water them if the bulb fibre is dry.

Top-dress borders with well-rotted compost or manure.

Divide and replant overcrowded clumps of hardy perennials where flowering has deteriorated.

Dig over beds which are going to be used for spring planting.

Take hardwood cuttings of strong-growing climbers.

Cut down any remaining canes of blackberries that have borne fruit this year.

Gather any remaining soft-leaved culinary herbs.

TIME-SAVING TIP If you hate the bother of staking plants, put in some self-supporting varieties including Digitalis (foxglove), Kniphofia (red hot poker), Rudbeckia (coneflower) and Echinops (globe thistle).
