EASY CHECK for the bright scarlet lily beetles that nibble holes in leaves, flowers and seedpods of fritillaries and lilies.

PINCH out soft tips of broad beans to cut risk of blackfly.

Inter-cropping with nasturtium will keep beans pest-free.

DIG up, divide and replant early primulas and violas.

EFFORT KEEP an eye out for cabbage white caterpillars. Rub any eggs off the leaves and pick off the bugs.

SOW wallflowers in a sunny corner to transplant in autumn, planting them with bulbs for flowers next spring.

TRIM and shape topiary.

TOUGH PRUNE early-flowering shrubs such as kerria, weigela, and ceonothus. Trim flowered stems by up to a third.

SORT out pond plants.

KEEP the greenhouse cool.

Use netting or apply a shading paint such as Pbi Coolglass. Fit automatic vent openers. Install a beaded curtain to stop cats.

DIY it

DON'T wait for plants to look sick - check them for pests and diseases. Large pests can be removed by hand or in the case of aphids washed off with soapy water. Check at night too. Rake up and destroy diseased leaves.
