GARDENING: DIY IT.

Byline: ADRIENNE WILD

IT'S possible to turn a neglected plot into a productive vegetable garden in just one season without having to lift a spade. Simply trample down any weeds to level the area then lay cardboard over them, making sure that the edges of each sheet overlap so all light is excluded. Spread compost in a 4in thick layer evenly over the cardboard to hold it in place and cover with a 6in layer of straw. The cardboard will eventually rot leaving a deep fertile soil. You can plant more or less immediately after the ground has been prepared. To plant simply make a hole through the cardboard so that the plant roots sit in the soil.
