    GANNETT ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS OF PUBLISHERS IN NEWSPAPER DIVISION
    ARLINGTON, Va. /PRNewswire/ -- Two publisher appointments were announced today in the newspaper division of Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI).
    Duane K. McCallister has been named president and publisher of the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger.
    William V. Monopoli succeeds McCallister as president and publisher of the Port Huron (Mich.) Times Herald.  He formerly was president and publisher of the Gainesville (Ga.) Times.
    McCallister, 47, is returning to Mississippi where he served as publisher of the Hattiesburg American from 1980 to 1986.  He originally joined Gannett in 1976 as general manager of the Suburban Newspaper Group in New Jersey.  In addition to his duties in Port Huron, McCallister also had served as a regional vice president in the Central Newspaper Group.
    A native of Charleston, W.Va., McCallister is a graduate of Marshall University and the University of Richmond.  He and his wife, Joyce, have three children.
    Monopoli, 41, joined Gannett in 1987, as publisher of the Suburban Newspaper Group in New Jersey.  He holds degrees from Boston College Law School, York University in Toronto and Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.
    Monopoli previously had been director of legislation and law reform for the Canadian Bar Association in Ottawa.  A native of Utica, N.Y., he and his wife, Mary, have one child.
    McCallister succeeds Thomas J. Shafer, who becomes a general executive in the South Regional Newspaper Group.
    Shafer, 44, joined the Clarion-Ledger in March 1990.  He previously held management positions with USA Today and Cape Publications in Brevard County, Fla.
    A successor to Monopoli in Gainesville will be named shortly.
    Gannett is a nationwide news and information company that publishes 86 daily newspapers, including USA Today, and USA Weekend, a newspaper magazine.  In addition to its television and radio stations, Gannett operates the largest outdoor advertising company in North America.
