GANG-RELATED THREATS CANCEL FOOTBALL GAME.

Byline: Daily News

MOJAVE - Mojave High School's football game tonight against Frazier Mountain High School was canceled because of gang-related threats of violence, officials said Thursday.

The game was canceled after a Mojave school deputy received information about ``a retaliatory act'' threatened as a result of a dispute between students, Kern County sheriff's officials said.

``We don't know if (the threats) are credible, but we wanted to err on the side of caution so we decided it would be wise to cancel the game,'' Mojave Superintendent Larry Phelps said.

Phelps said several people had reported to school officials about hearing that violence might erupt at the game and it might be gang-related. The threats were made by people from the Los Angeles area, Phelps said.

``The information came to us through adults and minors,'' Phelps said.

The High Desert League game was canceled by mutual consent of officials at the two schools, Phelps said.

Kern County sheriff's deputies and Mojave district officials were investigating the threats.
