X MEN: WOLVERINE'S RAGE

SPIDERMAN 2: THE SINISTER SIXGameBoy ColorJUST because Nintendo have a new baby to coddle doesn't mean they've forgotten their other children.

Like all good parents, they spare a thought for the first-born and have released two cracking carts for the GameBoy Color.

The Marvel licence provides a good living for Nintendo and two of their super-heroes leap back into the fray - Wolverine, of the X Men, and Spiderman.

Wolverine has made his share of appearances in the video game world, but his blades were blunted on a few SNES and Game Boy missions, forcing him back into the X Men fold.

Now, cashing in on the X Men success, he has been brought back to front the band again in a multi- platform hack-n-slash adventure of sorts. Wolverine's Rage uses the limitations of the GBC - the two-button system - as a plus, by only ever giving Wolverine two things to do -slash stuff with his claws and jump.

Seriously limiting as regards gameplay, you are left admiring Wolverine. His animations are great, they've got him in his classic yellow and blue threads, and the city he moves through looks appropriately burned-out and desolate.

It's mindless fun and easy to pick up for a quick level or two. If you're looking for a game that's little bit deeper, try out Spiderman 2: The Sinister Six instead.

The long-awaited sequel to last year's Spiderman, it finds the nasty Doctor Ock getting help from Scorpion, Sandman, Myserio and a load of others to - horror of horrors - kidnap Spidey's Auntie.

Played over 18 levels, there's more of a plot to this, while all the graphic heights have been retained.

Spiderman and Wolverine are a great double-header to keep the GBC going.

MICROSOFT TRAIN SIMULATOR PC

THIS should come with a warning on the box - something along the lines of "this is likely to damage the mental health of those who are not obsessed with the minutae of trains".

I suppose it was inevitable that all those real-life trainsets would end up on a computer CD. I mean, you no longer need an empty loft the size of a warehouse, nor will you soak up the national grid in electricity.

It also gives something no old-fashioned trainset can give, no matter how elaborate - you can get down into the cab and drive it yourself.

Fully installed, Train Simulator takes up about 1.8GB, which gives some idea of how much freight is wedged into this wagon.

You get all sorts of trains, including the Flying Scotsman, 600 miles worth of track in the United States, the Austrian Alps England and Japan, and you can run them in all seasons, night and day.

What's more, they all look real enough to sustain the image that you are sticking your head out of the driver's cab.

For some reason, you can also sit in the passenger coach and watch the scenery roll by. Now, I am not a train buff, so I don't know the lure of this, but a real train journey would be cheaper, I'd have thought, than buying this and sitting at home.

This is the wheeled version of Microsoft Flight Simulator, capable of being added to on a regular basis and fiendishly complicated. You can't hop in the cab, yelling "whoo-whoo" and get these trains going.

They are modelled so closely on real trains that the challenges are significant, but once you've mastered driving it, you can then try it on the wobbly bits - earthquake-damaged track in Japan, murder on the Orient Express and medical emergencies in England.

Of course, the thing I noticed most about this was the distinct lack of people. Microsoft's world, while highly detailed, is devoid of humans.

Perhaps they used Virgin as technical advisors. RATING 8/10

SHOGUN: WARLORD'S EDITION PC

SHOGUN: TOTAL WAR became a huge hit and spawned an online cult. Simply, it is real-time strategy on a grand scale, set in medieval warring Japan. You could create massive armies, make and break alliances, and try to become Shogun.

Building on the success, developer Creative Assembly is making a few more yen out of it.

The Warlord Edition includes the Mongol Invasion scenarios, available separately to gamers who already own the first one.

This, however, wraps the whole lot in one neat package. It includes the tweaks to sort out past niggles - the ability to have Ninja on the battlefield, for one - and fight the Mongol invaders.

The Warlord Edition offers nothing you couldn't get from The Mongol Invasions add-on, but now those who haven't leaped on this horse yet can get the whole experience in one box.

RAYMAN ADVANCE

GameBoy Advance

OH, a new handheld from Nintendo - let's put Rayman on it. You can almost hear UbiSoft's board meeting - so far, Rayman has been on the PlayStation, Saturn, Game Boy Color, PC and even the Jaguar. Possibly only PacMan has done more.

Rayman is France's take on Nintendo's Mario - a spiky-haired hero who has to be awakened from his hammock in order to save the world. Rayman's world is a bit like Miami Vice in a way - full of bright pastel shades, but with a lot of sharp objects and unbelievable villains as well.

As usual, one of them is on the loose, Rayman has to fight him, by throwing his fist as a projectile weapon, grabbing hold of ledges, swinging from hand-holds and using his hair as a helicopter.

The graphics in Rayman Advance are fantastic, no mean feat on on a portable system, while the soundtrack is catchy, if a little repetitive. RATING 8/10
