STAR TREK: BRIDGE COMMANDER PC CD ROM

THERE are, it has to be said, a disturbing amount of Star Trek games around - and an obsessive amount are being added.

We have Starfleet Command II: Empires At War, Star Trek Away Team, Deep Space Nine: Dominion Wars and this one, all out shortly.

When Totally Games began developing Bridge Commander its overriding intent was to get right into the Star Trek genre, as deep as possible.

The team went into geek mode, leafing through the "technical manuals" of a universe that doesn't exist.

However, step on to the centre stage of a Soverign class and feel the real. These interiors are straight off the movies and TV.

The graphic bells and whistles aren't much good without the gameplay to back it up, which starts with the four crewman you find waiting to take your orders and make them so.

Each of the four has a unique set of orders that can be given at any time. For example, your Helmswoman can be ordered to warp to the next sector, orbit a nearby planet or dock at a star base. For those occasions when you simply can't resist thumbing your nose at a Romulan, then the Tactical Officer is on hand to engage hostile enemy craft or execute strategic combat manoeuvres.

The Science Officer may not look like Spock, but he has all the same functions - and a Chief Engineer - without a terrible Scots accent - takes charge of your shields.

You,on the other hand, simply sit back and play the bridge magnate.

For the single player, a total of eight episodes have been designed, with each episode consisting of a number of missions.

Though the focus of Bridge Commander is squarely on space combat, a typical mission may also involve a degree of diplomacy, a well-timed hijack or a perfectly executed escort.

An eight-way death match allows players to take charge of any of the vessels featured. RATING 8/10

GOLD AND GLORY: THE ROAD TO EL DORADO PC CD ROM

WHEN it comes to computer adventures with animated heroes, Disney Interactive remains undisputed king. I mean, how can the rest cope with the likes of Aladdin, Toy Story 2 and Hercules?

Well, like all title holders, they have wannabes who plan to take them on - UbiSoft being one.

However, previous title attempts - the disastrous Dinosaur among them - have relied on second-string animated film fare, which is not a good start.

So, just as its big screen predecessor was beaten to a pulp because it was too childish for children, so too does this inane adventure for tweens fall well below consumer expectations.

Miguel and Tulio are supposed to be 16th century adventurers. In fact, they are Bill and Ted in pantaloons, complete with immortal dialogue such as "You're looking a mite under the weather, mister ... care for a biscuit?"

Together, the duo must overcome obstacles, each of which can be surmounted through mental prowess , but identifying the game's intended audience is probably the toughest challenge of all - the young, dude crowd is a likely target, but they'll have neither the patience nor the temperament for it, even if there are only seven keys to master.

It's the sheer nonsense of it that will drive people away. For instance, if you want to make a little money gambling, it will take you 20 minutes to get enough for a decent drink. You have to waltz along the same path twice, just so both characters reach the same location. Alternatively, there are the infuriating solutions given for problems you didn't even know you had - one involves knowing you need a poster to sort out a bull you haven't encountered.

Worst of all is the hip humour, which falls into the "gonnae no say that" category, but at least the fashionably-rendered 3D artwork earns some praise. In the end, Disney Interactive is in no danger from this.

DRACULA: THE LAST RESURRECTION PC CD ROM

DREAMCATCHER Interactive is responsible for games such as Riddle Of The Sphinx, Odyssey, Time Machine, and Dracula: The Resurrection.

They all have a slightly dated look, more Myst than Grim Fandango, but the scenery looks good, the keys and door combinations are well-hidden and the characters interesting.

The French-made game is a faithful extension to the Bram Stoker story line. After rescuing his fiancee, Mina, from Drac's clutches in the first game, Jonathan Harker brings her back to London, where the Count continues to pursue them.

Like Resurrection before it, this wraps up a workmanlike adventure with artful design and a coffin-load of atmosphere. The scenery is highly-detailed, washed in moody lighting and drenched in creepy sound effects. It's not great, but it is a game that can make you jump.

EVIL ISLANDS PlayStation

NOW we know what it takes to be a sword-and-sorcery hero. Not skill, strength or magical acumen. All you need is a grand entrance into some town or province besieged by evil, hefting a technologically-advanced weapon.

In this, you play a bloke who wakes up on a strange island - the first of three you explore during the game - and is hailed as the Chosen One, because he has a metal knife.

Nival is a Russian programming team, so this could be a joke that seemed a riot when your were on the vodka.

However, vodka-fuelled or not, Nival turned out a fairly slick game, with all the usual suspects - experience and points to spend on your offensive or defensive skills.

Evil Islands has a good graphics engine - a PC slower than 400 may have you reduce stuff such as shadows - and is addictive and fun to play.
