GAMEPRO MAGAZINE SIGNS NATIONAL CABLE TELEVISION AGREEMENT
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- GamePro magazine today announced the signing of an exclusive cable television agreement with USA Network and its new affiliate, the Sci-Fi Channel. Under the agreement, GamePro would produce 26 half-hour episodes of the "GamePro" television show to air weekly on the Sci-Fi Channel beginning Sept. 26, 1992.
GamePro, the country's most popular and fastest growing video entertainment magazine, produced and aired a syndicated television program which debuted in over 85 percent of the country in September 1991. The new program, also to be called "GamePro," will air Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. and Sunday mornings at 7:30 a.m. on the Sci-Fi Channel. Commencing Jan. 2, a half hour "GamePro Videogame Special" will also air the first Saturday of each month on USA Network in the 7:30 a.m. time slot. Production of the first 10 episodes is scheduled to begin in early September.
Under the terms of the new agreement, GamePro would continue to produce the popular program on video game hardware and software products, but with an increased emphasis on gaming hints and strategies. GamePro magazine additionally acquired several 30-second spot positions during each half-hour program. These will be offered to selected youth product advertisers as special multi-media sponsorship packages.
"We're very excited to continue to offer GamePro's unique blend of videogame news in the television arena, particularly cable," said John Rousseau, publisher. "We expect it to affect the circulation of GamePro magazine in a very positive way. It also provides both ourselves and our advertisers with an excellent opportunity to effectively reach a loyal core audience of video gamers. The number of households subscribing to cable on weekends has increased by 1.1 million from 1990 to 1991 alone."
"GamePro has always been committed to promoting the video game industry as a whole," said Patrick Ferrell, president. "Its continued exposure via such mass media vehicles as the television program will help to ensure that the market continues to flourish."
USA Network is a joint venture between MCA and Paramount Communications, and is a 24-hour all-entertainment network serving 58 million subscribers. Its subsidiary, the Sci-Fi Channel, makes its debut Sept. 24, and features the best of science fiction, science fact, fantasy and horror. It will have an initial estimated audience of 10 million viewers, and will feature such programs as Dark Shadows, Dr. Who, Lost in Space, War of the Worlds, and Hitchcock Presents.
"We are delighted that the GamePro show, which offers top-notch original programming, will be the lead-in for our morning youth program block," said Barry Schulman, vice president of Programming for the Sci- Fi Channel. "In addition to excellent levels of production and entertainment value, it offers an established and devoted audience which we feel will be instrumental in channeling excitement for our morning youth-oriented programming."
"A quality show like GamePro is extremely suited for cable programming, especially the Sci-Fi Channel," continued Dick Askin, president of The Samuel Goldwyn Company. "The focus on similar target audiences creates a win-win situation for both partners."
GamePro Publishing Inc. publishes both GamePro and S.W.A.T.PRO magazines, monthly publications serving the video game cartridge market and targeting young people ages 8 to 20. Both magazines are designed to showcase leading-edge video game products and feature hard-hitting editorial and dynamic graphics.
