 MIAMI, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Mark S. Gallegos has been appointed by Patricia A. Seitz, president of the Florida Bar to serve as chairperson for the Florida Bar Standing Committee on Equal Opportunity in the Profession.
 The committee's charge is to promote full and equal participation in the legal profession by minorities and women.
 "Advancing and economically empowering minorities in the legal profession and in all professions is not only good business it is an urgent priority in Florida and in our Nation," said Gallegos.
 Gallegos' objectives are to promote the admission, retention, graduation and job placement of minority law students, and the hiring and advancement of minority lawyers, as well as law professors and deans at Florida's law schools. He also plans to promote the appointment of minority and female judges to the state and federal courts of Florida.
 On his appointment, Patricia Seitz, president of the Florida Bar, said "The legal system exists to obtain justice for all -- the highest ideal of our democracy. That is why it is so important, that within the profession, justice for all should exist: specifically, in the area of equal opportunity, to be of service for all lawyers. Mark Gallegos' experience and vision are essential for the committee and the profession to attain their ideals."
 Gallegos received a joint degree in Economics and Political Science from Yale University in 1977, and a juris doctorate degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1982 and currently serves on the law school board of advisors.
 As a member of the Hispanic National Bar Association, Gallegos, who is of Mexican-American heritage, has served in several capacities over the years, including director and as national president from 1988 to 1989. On behalf of the association, he has made presentations and spoken at numerous national and international conferences, and television and radio programs, including the bi-annual conference of the Collegio de Abogados in San Salvador, El Salvador. From 1987 to 1991, Gallegos served as a commissioner on the American Bar Association's Commission on Opportunities for Minorities in the Legal Profession by appointment of the president of the American Bar Association.
 In 1986 and 1987, Gallegos was selected as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America and in 1988 and 1990 was selected for Who's Who in American Law. In 1989, he served as vice-chair of the Florida Bar's Commission on Equal Opportunity in the Profession. In 1989 Hispanic Business Magazine listed Gallegos as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the United States.
 During the past 10 years, Gallegos has been active in the Greater Miami community with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the Spanish- American League Against Discrimination, the Coalition of Hispanic American Women, the Mexican-American Council, the American Jewish Committee, ASPIRA Youth Leadership Project and the Miami Mayor's Economic Development Advisory Board. Gallegos just completed a term with the U.S. Senate Conference Task Force on Hispanic Affairs for the 101st Congress.
 Gallegos is a founding partner in the Miami law firm, Mitrani, Rynor & Gallegos, P.A., where his practice has evolved from corporate and securities law to include a broad range of foreign investment, real estate, corporate finance and public finance issues. He has also represented foreign businessmen, foreign government representatives, the clergy and political refugees in immigration matters.
