GALAXY PICKS NORTHRIDGE GOALKEEPER.

Byline: Daily News

Cal State Northridge goalkeepr Joe Barton was drafted by the Galaxy in the fifth round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft in Kansas City, Mo., on Friday.

Barton, the Big West Conference goalkeeper of the year who led CSUN to its first NCAA Division I playoff appearance in school history, was picked 55th overall and became the first Matador to be picked in the MLS draft.

The 2002 MLS-champion Galaxy made 17-year-old midfielder Guillermo ``Memo'' Gonzalez, who led the U-17 national team in scoring in 2002, its top choice with the eighth overall selection.

In another move, the Galaxy traded backup goalkeeper Matt Reis to New England for midfielder/forward Alex Pineda Chacon, the 2001 MLS MVP, and the 19th overall draft pick.

Also, the team selected UCLA defender Scot Thompson, Loyola Marymount forward Arturo Torres and Clemson defender Ricky Lewis with the 16th, 19th and 20th picks, respectively.

In the fourth round, the Galaxy drafted Bradley forward Hamid Mehreioskouei and then picked UCLA midfielder Jimmy Frazelle in the fifth round.
