GAIN TECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCES FIRST SOFTWARE TO MEET MULTIMEDIA NEEDS
 OF LARGE-SCALE CORPORATE COMPUTER NETWORKS
GainMomentum(R) Designed to Create Multimedia Applications
 That Boost Computer User Productivity
PALO ALTO, Calif., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Gain Technology Inc. today announced the general availability of GainMomentum(R) Version 1.0, the first true object-oriented multimedia application development and delivery system for medium- and large-scale multiuser computers.
The GainMomentum software provides a complete environment for developing large-scale, interactive multimedia applications incorporating sound, full-motion video, animation, hypertext, graphics, and corporate data on corporate and departmental computer systems.
"We see a dramatic shift in the corporate computing environment," said Thomas M. Siebel, Gain CEO. "In the immediate future 100 MIP computers will appear on the corporate desktop, all multimedia- enabled, all networked together, running the business.
"General purpose computer applications will begin to look more like color television than teletype machines, more like CNN than dumb terminal devices. This paradigm shift is inevitable," Siebel said. "GainMomentum is the first product that allows the development of such applications."
Gain developed its products under a unique joint-development agreement with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. of Osaka, Japan, the largest consumer electronics company in the world. Matsushita has previously announced its intention to deploy Gain software in a new generation of consumer electronics products including its strategic HDTV efforts.
"This bilateral technology transfer allowed Gain to complete this massive software project in record time," Siebel said. "It coupled American and Japanese engineers working together daily over a two and one-half year period on a large-scale software engineering effort on opposite sides of the globe." GainMomentum Primary Markets
GainMomentum is targeted at commercial and governmental enterprises with heterogenous computer networks that support large numbers of professional users. Primary market segments for GainMomentum include those where multimedia applications can increase knowledge worker productivity, including financial, sales, personnel, online training and support, customer support, and other business applications that can benefit from sensory-rich data representations. Creating Applications with GainMomentum
GainMomentum provides a visual, or "code-free," object-based application architecture. The product employs an intuitive user interface enabling customers to create applications with little or no knowledge of computer programming. GainMomentum also permits developers as well as applications to share and reuse multimedia data objects.
"What we're doing with GainMomentum is providing an integrated architectural framework that gives our customers the power and flexibility to build applications that use any media, incorporate any data from any place on the network, and deliver those applications on any platform," Siebel said. About GainMomentum
GainMomentum is the result of 60 person-years of software development. The product consists of an object-oriented database, an application programming interface, a hypermedia engine, the Gain Extension Language (GEL), a complete set of media editors and an intuitive visual user interface that complies with both OSF/Motif and OPEN LOOK interface standards. Platforms, Availability and Beta Users
GainMomentum currently runs on the Sun SparcStation and SPARC compatibles. Versions of GainMomentum for DEC, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Silicon Graphics workstations will be available by summer 1992. GainMomentum has been extensively beta tested by Cadence Design Systems, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Sun Microsystems Computer Corp.
Gain has entered into a development assistance agreement with IBM Corp., providing Gain's multimedia software for the IBM RISC System/6000. Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. and Gain have also entered into an agreement under which Sun will build and distribute Gain-based multimedia applications on Sun workstations. How GainMomentum is Sold
GainMomentum is sold through Gain's worldwide sales force. List price for a single user licence is $20,000. Currently, GainMomentum is sold as the nucleus of an integrated custom support program called Headstart. Headstart is a program designed to ensure successful completion of a fully functional application prototype. The program consists of a complement of GainMomentum software licenses and Gain technical and consulting support. Pricing varies with the scope of the required application prototype, but is typically in the range of $150,000. About Gain Technology
