GABRIELA SABATINI AND PEPSI USE 'POWER SERVE' AS AN ACE

IN THE WORLDWIDE COLA WARS; EXCITING NEW TELEVISION COMMERCIAL TO DEBUT
SOMERS, N.Y., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Gabriela Sabatini -- a stunning combination of power and grace, ranked third in the world in women's tennis -- joins forces with Pepsi-Cola International to give a "Power Serve" to the Pepsi business worldwide.
Sabatini stars in an exciting new Pepsi commercial for Pepsi-Cola International that will break in Latin America in the next few weeks before airing worldwide. "Power Serve," the new :30-second spot, was produced by long-time Pepsi advertising agency BBDO/NY, and directed by Bob Giraldi, the acclaimed director who opened a new chapter in television advertising with his 1984 TV spots starring Michael Jackson.
Sabatini will also appear in Pepsi print ads and point-of-purchase materials around the world. In addition, the tennis star will appear on Pepsi's behalf at media conferences, charity functions and special event tours. Her photo will grace Pepsi billboards and appear on the labels of Pepsi's new PRP (plastic returnable bottle) packaging, which is a phenomenal success in Argentina, Holland and Germany. A television special on her life and career is also scheduled to air in June.
The new television spot for brand Pepsi portrays Sabatini practicing her powerful serve, as two youngsters watch from the stands. Her last serve rockets its way to the nearby Pepsi vending machine, hits the button and produces a can of Pepsi. "Great serve!", marvel the kids. The camera fades on Sabatini drinking the Pepsi.
"Gabriela's marvelous combination of style, power and unpredictability mirrors Pepsi's image worldwide," said Mark Blecher, Marketing Manager, Pepsi-Cola International. "She's a winner, who does things her own way. In short, she fits perfectly with our brand."
In August, 1991, Sabatini became the first female athlete to join Pepsi's team of celebrity endorsers.
In January of this year, she went on to win the New South Wales Open in Sydney, Australia and the Pan Pacific Open in Japan. Last month, Sabatini won the Family Circle Cup on Hilton Head, South Carolina and finished as a finalist in the Lipton International Players Championships in Key Biscayne, Fla.
Sabatini launched her professional tennis career at the age of 14, and at 16 became the youngest player to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals. Although she has won 19 championships during her six-year career, she made a bold move in 1990 in changing coaches to kick-start her game.
Under the watchful eye of Carlos Kimayr, a former Brazilian tennis star, she won the 1990 U.S. Open, and has developed into a more versatile player. In fact, she has the best record of all men and women on the 1991 tour.
"I went from soft-spoken to outgoing," said Sabatini, "from shy to fun-loving. And that's when Pepsi first approached me about joining its family. We have a lot in common."
"Associating our brands with great athletes is another way of positioning Pepsi as the cola choice for winners," added Blecher. "And toward that, Gabriela adds a lot."
Other sports celebrities sponsored by Pepsi in the past include San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana; America's Cup defender Dennis Conner; Brazilian soccer legend Pele; and three-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Earvin "Magic" Johnson, who now owns an interest in a Pepsi bottling operation in Washington, D.C.
Pepsi-Cola International (PCI) is the International soft-drink division of New York-based PepsiCo, Inc. PCI is one of the world's fastest-growing divisions with 1991 sales of approximately U.S. $1.5 billion.
