G.I. JOE - RETALIATION (12A) [...].
G.I. JOE - RETALIATION (12A) CAST: Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum PLOT: Inspired by the Hasbro comic and toy empire, Retaliation is a sequel to the poor 2009 film The Rise of Cobra. Many GIs are eliminated, leaving Roadblock (Johnson) to lead the fightback.
GOOD POINTS: There is some decent early banter between the likeable Johnson and Tatum (Duke). A spectacular but almost equally short sequence features London under the kind of attack we've seen so often in US cities.
BAD POINTS: Step Up dance director Jon M Chu is soon relying on half a dozen violent showdowns too many instead of concentrating on meaningful drama. Bruce Willis's General Colton appears to be stifling yawns in his latest pointless cameo and Jonathan Pryce is too old to play a US president in this era. Like the recent Red Dawn and forthcoming Olympus Has Fallen, North Korea is a convenient enemy. SHOULD I SEE IT? Dwight Eisenhower referred to the all-important common soldier as GI Joe. Before becoming US President he was a five-star general - but this is a shallow, two-star film.
LIKEABLE: Dwayne Johnson.
