G-8 urges world to keep up fight against terrorism.

WHISTLER, Canada, June 12 Kyodo

The Group of Eight (G-8) major countries released a report Wednesday urging the international community to continue making efforts to combat terrorism.

''Further action is required from all nations -- individually and collectively -- to sustain a truly effective global offensive against terrorism,'' said the report on the progress in G-8 antiterrorism efforts since the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States.

The report was released after the opening session of the two-day G-8 foreign ministerial meeting in this ski resort in western Canada.

It reported progress in three areas -- strengthening security measures in the G-8 members, beefing up international measures against terrorism and assisting non-G-8 countries' antiterrorism efforts.

For measures within the G-8, the paper said they have implemented new laws and policies to strengthen political, diplomatic, military, legal, intelligence, law enforcement and financial couterterrorism activities. ''We have invested billions of dollars in enhancing security.''

The report also said the G-8 has been utilizing U.N. counterterrorism instruments to crack down on terrorism, including U.N. Security Council resolutions.

It stressed the importance of the U.N. instruments, calling on nations to implement measures to prevent bombings, hijackings and hostage-taking, deny safe havens and stop terrorism financing and supply of weapons.

The G-8, on the other hand, has been assisting other countries in building their terrorism-fighting capacities through ''training, institution-building, cooperation among law enforcement and intelligence groups and sharing of technical expertise,'' the report said.

The G-8 groups Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the U.S.
