Funkwerks releases new ale.

Funkwerks, the Saison-focused brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado, announced today the release of Provincial, its newest summer seasonal Belgian-Style Ale.

According to the brewery, "Provincial is a highly carbonated, light, refreshingly tart beer with citrusy pineapple aromas...the aromas carry through to the flavor leading to a dry finish." Provincial will be on draft in bar and restaurants and in 750 ml bottles in liquor stores across Colorado and Nebraska beginning this month. The Funkwerks tasting room in Fort Collins, CO will also have Provincial on tap and in bottles. "Ve vet each seasonal by doing several experimental batches to assure the final recipe is right. Provincial is no exception," said Brad Lincoln, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner. "The result is a summer citrus beer that we're very proud of." Mr. Lincoln said the beer was inspired by the German Berliner Veisse style. He reported that Funkwerks allowed the wort to mature overnight with lactobacillus. The following day it was boiled and transferred to the fermentor where a Belgian wheat yeast strain was added. Mr. Lincoln said the 5.6% ABV unfiltered ale is best consumed fresh, and might pair nicely with fresh fish ceviche.

"Saisons brewed in the early 20th century were the product of mixed fermentations and of a lower alcohol content than the versions we have today," noted Gordon Schuck, Funkwerks CoFounder/Owner and Head Brewer. "Provincial is our take on how these older style Saisons may have tasted. Tart and fruity yet dry and refreshing, this just may be the perfect summer beer." Funkwerks co-founders/owners Brad Lincoln and Gordon Schuck met in 2009 while studying brewing science at the Siebel Institute in Chicago, IL. The two graduated, and set about opening a brewery. The result was Funkwerks, which opened on December 9, 2010. Funkwerks' two flagship beers, Saison and Tropic King, are produced yearround. Also brewed annually are four seasonals; a number of smaller, experimental batches; and select barrel-aged releases. Funkwerks flagship Saison was awarded a gold medal at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival and a silver medal in 2011. Deceit, a Belgian-Style golden strong ale, was also awarded a gold medal at the GABF in 2012. In addition to receiving two gold medals in 2012, the GABF named Funkwerks the 2012 Small Brewing Company of the Year.
