Funk party.

"The baddest funk big band around'' is one description of The BT-ALC Big Band. Playing the original compositions and arrangements of leaders Brian Thomas and Alex Lee-Clark, the band will bring its sound (and initials) to the Jazz at Sunset summer concert series at 6:30 p.m. July 18 in SAC Park, Shrewsbury.

The music takes the tradition of the big bands of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Thad Jones and infuses it with the funk of greats such as Parliament Funkadelic, The Crusaders, The Meters and James Brown & the JB's.

The result: the band has also been called "an absolute party happening on the bandstand.''

Admission is $20; $16 students, WICN members and WOO card; free, children under 12. For more information, visit www.jazzatsunset.net. (Richard Duckett)
