Fundraiser hitting the right note.

Byline: Mike Brown Reporter mike.brown@trinitymirror.com

A VENTURE Scout is set for a trip of a lifetime to Japan - but needs to raise more than PS3,000 to get there.

Patrick Hughes, 16, has been fundraising around Great Ayton for months, organising a bring and buy clothing sale and a book exchange to raise enough for a dream trip to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan later this year.

But the Stokesley Secondary School pupil is saving his biggest event for later this month - an evening with country and western music star Hank Wangford at Great Ayton Church Hall.

Patrick said: "To get to the jamboree I need to raise PS3,020, to do that I have been doing some fundraising.

"I wrote to local businesses to get sponsorship but my main fundraising has been events where people donate but also gain something themselves in return; for instance I have been holding a continuous book exchange and sale at Stokesley Leisure Centre and a clothing bring and buy sale.

"I did a Pampered Chef evening and had a children's tombola at the Great Ayton village fete."

This year's Jamboree will see Scouts from all over the world gather for the annual celebration.

Patrick will camp at Kirara-hama near Yamaguchi City, and take a trip to Hiroshima for the 70th anniversary of the dropping of the nuclear bomb. Those going to the jamboree will also stay in Tokyo, and spend time with the family of a Japanese scout to experience real life in the country.

Patrick's mum Jo Batey said: "He has got his mock exams coming up, but he is still dedicated to fundraising to get to Japan. "He loves Japanese food and he is very excited to get out there. To organise a concert this big, and do all the other things he has, is fantastic."

Tickets for the Hank Wangford and Brad Breath gig on Saturday, February 28, are PS10 and are available from 07542 328192. Doors will open at 6.30pm for a 7.30pm start.
