Funding bombs; LETTERS.

[bar] SIR - No doubt readers know of the illegal use by many countries of cluster bombs, which disperse bomblets whose deadly effects are in their temptation to be picked up by children or trodden on accidentally. They have killed or maimed thousands of civilians over 40 years.

Cluster bombs are banned by many countries and legislation is going through Parliament to ratify the Cluster Munitions Convention that will prohibit direct financial support for their production in Britain, their use, transfer and stockpiling.

Including the UK there are 138 financial institutions in 45 countries involved, including HSBC, RBS, Barclays and Lloyds Banking Group.

Amnesty International has long campaigned against their manufacture, use and funding and suggests that if anyone is involved with one of these banks and feels strongly against their use to protest to them.
