Wii U PS49.99 *****

When The Wind Waker was first released on the Gamecube 10 years ago, there was outrage. Zelda fans had hoped for a realistic portrayal of Hyrule on the then-groundbreaking hardware, but instead got a cell-shaded cartoony romp on the high seas, far removed from the Zelda of old.

However, The Wind Waker proved to be one of the finest Zelda adventures and its initially divisive art style became an inspiration for many imitators. This Wii U remake, complete with full-HD visuals, is by far the best way to revisit the game, or enjoy it as a newcomer.

As with all Zelda games, The Wind Waker combines puzzle solving, exploration and combat in a pitch-perfect mix, giving you time to soak in the imaginative world while unlocking secrets along the way.

A host of Wii U-specific features have also been added. Standards such as touchscreen inventory management and offscreen Gamepad play have been included, as has online Miiverse integration.

Perhaps most interesting of all though are the gameplay tweaks. A new sail allows for 50 per cent faster travelling speeds, while the final third of the game, which always felt padded out by filler, has been streamlined too.

If you were put off first time around, there's never been a better time to weigh anchor.
