Fry hope Vukovar in Tingle Creek gamble.

Byline: David Carr

THERE was still strong support last night for 888sport Tingle Creek Chase steamer Vukovar, who has been backed in from 25-1 to as short as 8-1 for the Sandown Grade 1 on Saturday.

Harry Fry's five-year-old was backed into single figures with several firms yesterday and is now third favourite with one of them despite having just one novice chase win to his name in three starts since arriving from France.

Vukovar, who will be ridden for the first time by Davy Russell, has not been sighted since finishing seventh in the JLT Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March, but that has failed to dampen punters' enthusiasm in a contest shorn of star names Sprinter Sacre and Sire De Grugy.

A King George entry points to the regard in which Fry holds Vukovar and the trainer said: "It is a big ask first time out on only his fourth run over fences as a five-year-old but we like him and we will find out whether he is a two-miler or whether we have got to step up in trip.
