Aston Villa have failed to cash in on slip-ups by their Champions League chasing rivals as they drew 0-0 with West Ham.

Villa could have closed the gap on the top four after Manchester City - beaten at Everton - and Tottenham, held at home by Hull, both dropped points on Saturday.

But a combination of a below-par performance and some fine saves by Robert Green meant they had to settle for their first goalless draw of the campaign in the top flight.

For the Hammers the result saw them move our of the Premier League bottom three.

Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Stewart Downing all had half-chances as Villa made most of the running but West Ham, who have won only one away league game this season, were well organised at the back and generally coped well.

Goalkeeper Rob Green was rarely tested but was quick off his line in stoppage time to smother at the feet of Agbonlahor when the forward was sent through by John Carew's flick.
