From the reporter's desk.

I'm starting a new column as a way to include all the little bits of information that don't make it into the front half of the paper. Consider it a behind-the-scenes DVD extra for your local business news.

Each month I talk to a lot of people and fill an entire notebook with quotes and notes from interviews. (Yes, I'm still hooked on pen and paper.) More than half of that information doesn't make it into the articles I write, but it's still interesting stuff.

For example, this month I was intrigued to find out that one of the reasons Seattle Manufacturing Company moved to Whatcom County was for its affordble cost of living.

"My secret passion is that everybody (on staff) could own a house;' president Kathy Hughes said near the end of our interview.

Homes were a lot more affordable 11 years ago when SMC moved to Ferndale, but that level of consideration for employees is still apparent at the company.
