A BABY was born at Coventry hospital weighing the same as a Christmas turkey.

The infant tipped the scales at 12lb 7oz (5.77kg) - matching the weight of the turkeys heading for dinner tables this December.

The baby, born in 2012, was the heaviest in the last five years of those born at the university hospital in Walsgrave.

The heaviest so far this year weighed 11lb 9oz (5.4kg).

Last year's heaviest baby was 12lb 3oz (5.58kg).

In 2014 the heaviest baby was 11lb 8oz (5.35kg). And in 2013 the heaviest one was 12lb 1oz (5.49kg).

The figures were revealed in a Freedom of Information request by the Coventry Telegraph to the hospital.

The average baby is born weighing 7lb 8oz (3.4kg).

Women who developed diabetes before they became pregnant or develop the condition while they are pregnant are more likely than other mothers to have a large baby.

Other reasons are if the baby's mother has a high body mass index, if the baby's mother puts on weight during pregnancy or if the baby is born more than two weeks later than expected.
