From institutional underpads to a complete AI range: one supplier's success story.

Adult incontinence product manufacturer Medical Disposables, Marietta, GA, started out in the disposable absorbent products business in 1971 making hospital underpads. It even became vertically integrated for a while, manufacturing roll goods for its adult incontinence line. Now, 20 years later, the company has abandoned roll goods manufacture and expanded its end product line into the retail market, carving a successful niche for itself in doing so. Under the leadership of Garnett Smith, who came on board when the company was acquired in a leveraged buyout in 1984, Medical Disposables now manufactures a complete line of adult incontinence products and is the second largest private label supplier in the retail market, with an estimated 7% of the overall adult incontinence market.

It still remains close to its institutional roots, with that segment making up approximately 60% of its business. The company manufactures "MaxiCare," its high end adult incontinence product that contains superabsorbent polymers and more "bells and whistles" and "PrimeTime," a less expensive institutional alternative. Medical Disposables is also working hard on growing the retail part of the business, where it supplies control label products under the "SureCare" name as well as various private label products.

Although the company got involved in the production of roll goods back in 1976 - it had a rayon carding operation - as the sophistication of both the end product and the roll good materials increased, Medical Disposables chose to concentrate strictly on end product manufacture and hasn't looked back since. The company currently buys both spunbonded and thermal bonded materials for its adult incontinence lines.

In the new product arena, it recently introduced "Simplicity," a contoured insert for its institutional line and also plans to purchase new equipment to expand capacity within the next month or two.
