From a bad girl to great mum ...

DEBRA Stephenson sounds extremely friendly on the phone.``Hello gorgeous!'' she squeals.``Mwah, mwah!''

The kisses sound a bit over the top until she explains they'refor her five-month-old son Max, who's gargling happily on her lap.``Oh don't worry -I'mnot blowing kisses down the phone to you,'' she giggles.

Little Max,Debra's first child, has had an enormous impact on the 30-year-old's life and career. After leaving her major role in ITV1's prison drama Bad Girls for fear of being typecast, she was tempted back when producers incorporated her pregnancy into the life of her character, bisexual, bullying hooker Shell Dockley.

But filming while she was eight months pregnant took its toll on Debra.

``It was quite full -on,quite demanding physically and emotionally,'' she says.``My hormones were all over the place.

``There were quite a few emotional scenes for Shell and it was difficult to turn off the tap, difficult to snap out of it. Without giving too much away, the plot surrounding Shell's baby is pretty sad,and it was poignant for me because I actually was pregnant. It really got to me.''

Debra's old and new friends -including ex Coronation Street star Amanda Barrie and Stephanie Beacham, whop lay new inmates in the forthcoming series - helped ease her pregnancy pains.

``Amanda Barrie is such a laugh,''giggles Debra. ``She seems absolutely potty but has an amazing sense of humour, so if ever anything got too much for me she could make me laugh.

``And Stephanie Beacham - what can I say? I used to watch her on The Colbys and Connie when I was young and really admired her. She was one of the actresses who inspired me.

``She's this big Hollywood star so I was a bit intimidated at first. She's so elegant and refined I thought I'dhave to watch my ps and qs,but she's so down to earth and lovely.

``And because she has two grown-updaughters, she knew how it felt to be so heavily pregnant. I had really swollen ankles a - honestly,my legs were like upside down legs because they were thicker at the bottom like tree trunks - and she gave me a foot massage. I was sitting in her dressing room thinking, `StephanieBeacham is massaging my feet -I am having a surreal moment.'''
