NEW BRAINTREE -- Two 15-year-old Russian students who attended the Massachusetts State Police Student Trooper program at the State Police Academy raised nearly $550 for slain MIT Police Officer Sean Collier's Memorial Fund.

Cadets Mark Romanov and Pave Kuvanin are from the Alexander Nevsky Karelia Cadet Corps in Petrozavodsk, Russia. They earned the chance to participate in the Student Trooper program when they scored highest in their class based upon academic performance, physical fitness and English proficiency.

As a result they were awarded a fellowship grant from the Charitable Fund of Katanandov to Children. This grant paid all of the cadets' travel expenses, except for housing and cultural experiences provided by their Massachusetts State Police Trooper hosts: Sgt. Anna C. Brookes, Trooper Robert A. Johnson, Trooper James J. Foley and Trooper Patricia Riley.

The cadets marched in uniform on July 4 in the Fitchburg Civic Days Parade with Fitchburg Police Chief Robert Robert DeMoura, Deputy Chief Phil Kearns and Captain Paul Bozicas and behind American police officers from the Fitchburg and Leominster motorcycle units.

Wearing their uniforms of the Karelia Cadet Corps, they carried a banner encouraging donations to slain MIT Police Officer Sean Collier's Memorial Fund. The cadets presented a check for $547.50 for the Memorial Fund to Massachusetts State Police Lt. Col. Sharon Costine during a presentation at the Massachusetts State Police Academy before graduation.

Officer Collier died on April 18 after being shot by the Boston Marathon bombing suspects Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Tamerlan Tsarnev was later killed and his brother taken into custody.
