Frisbee Golfers give it a fling; STATELY HOME LANDS GAME'S FIRST OFFICIAL UK COURSE.
FRISBEE Golf will tee off for the first time in Wales in an inaugural tournament at an iconic mansion next weekend.
Popular in North America, the sport has made some inroads on this side of the Atlantic since its inception in the 1960s but never have the owners of the Frisbee brand got behind a British course.
But the plans for a course at the National Trust owned Plas Newydd on Anglesey so impressed Frisbee makers Wham-O they took the unprecedented step of lending their backing to it.
Plas Newydd Head Gardener and course designer Paul O'Byrne said: "The people at Wham-O were so excited about the prospect of a Frisbee Golf Course at Plas Newydd that they asked to be involved."
The historic house in its grounds on the banks of the Menai Strait is proving a hit with big name toy and game manufacturers, as only three months ago Plas Newydd was unveiled as the Mayfair (ie most expensive) property on the Anglesey version of the Monopoly board game.
Frisbee Golf works the same way as conventional golf with 9 or 18 holes of varying difficulty, but instead of clubs and a ball, players use Frisbees and baskets.
"It's a great game, because even though it does require a fair amount of skill, the whole family can play," added Paul, "It's also really easy to pick up and gets everyone outside and ready to play and explore."
. The Golf competition open to all tomorrow 3pm.
More 01248 The course has been built, complete with specialist baskets, in the Dairy Wood at the entrance to Plas Newydd which is rapidly becoming the mansion's centre for adventure, with the impressive obstacle course and play area.
Up until now any such course in the UK, although colloquially called Frisbee Golf, could only be called Disc Golf as they had not been officially recognised by the makers.
Frisbee is today and from 11am to details on 714795. It isn't the first time golf will be played at Plas Newydd.
Paul added: "We know there was once a golf course on the estate that the Anglesey family often played, but now with the Frisbee Golf course everyone can enjoy a round at Plas Newydd."
