Friends Brewing offers Oktoberfest

In 1810, Bavaria's Prince Ludwig held a nine-day wedding reception. The event became so popular it became an annual national holiday--Oktoberfest.

According to Friends Brewing Co. president Dow Scoggins, whose company produces Georgia's Helenboch Oktoberfest beer, 1991 marks the 180th anniversary of those nuptials, which, according to tradition, is a 16-day fest that always ends the first Sunday in October. In keeping this practice, "true Oktoberfest" will ran from September 21 through October 6 this year.

With those dates in mind, Friends Brewing released its 1991 Oktoberfest in Atlanta on September 21, and modified the beer according to the Bavarian tradition that such beers be one-time brews for each Fest.

Scoggins noted that this year's Oktoberfest has a "fresh, sweet, malt aroma, which on first taste is sweet, then malty with a slightly dry finish."

"According to tradition, Oktoberfest beers are made with each season's finest harvest of barley and hops, thus making the brew unique each year," Scoggins said. "We enjoy continuing that precept, and think our consumers like to take part in that history."
