Freudenberg reaches definitive agreement for purchase of Lantor Group.

In a surprise move in March, the Freudenberg Group, Weinheim, Germany, the largest nonwovens roll goods producer in the world, announced plans to acquire the Lantor Group, Veenendaal, The Netherlands, the 13th largest producer of roll goods worldwide. Terms were not disclosed and no final purchase date has been set.

The Lantor Group, which was acquired from former parent Tootal by Coats Viyella in early 1991, was put up for sale last fall when Coats Viyella announced plans to divest the small part of its overall business, which includes no other nonwovens companies. The purchase by Freudenberg will add more than $120 million in annual sales to the German company's turnover of $950 million, as well as bring complementary markets inhouse. Both companies supply interlinings and filtration media as well as various industrial nonwovens to the international nonwovens industry. Lantor has operations in the U.K., The Netherlands and Bellingham, MA as well as plants in Australia, Hong Kong and Korea.

There has been no indication yet of organizational changes or long term plans regarding the acquisition.
