French starts to connect.

Fashion chain French Connection has said it is putting last year's financial troubles behind it as recent sales growth pointed to the "start of a new phase".

The group saw 3% like-for-like sales growth in its UK and Europe retail division over the three months to the end of April, offering hope that 2007 will not see a repeat of the double digit profit falls seen in the past two years.

French Connection reported pre-tax profits down 67% to pounds 4m for the year ended January 31, coming after a 53% profits drop the previous year.

The high street label said, despite poor autumn and winter forward orders for its UK and European wholesale business, it was pleased with the performance of its French Connection range, which was "driving improvement in our business".
